NLI collection

In an effort to document the traditions of the kehiliot from the dispora, the National Library of Israel (NLI) made many recordings, dating back to the 1950s and later. Amongst these recordings, many Dutch recordings can be found, both Ashkenazi, as well as Sephardi.

The recordings on this website so far, made for the NIK by many individuals, were made as tuition material for young chazzanim and comprise recordings of complete services. These recordings have been (almost) fully indexed, implying that each tefilla is split into small parts, linked to the text. This makes it easy for a student to learn the services.

In contrast, the recordings of the NLI intended to document the minhag in greater context, and are thus interviews in Hebrew or English with lots of talking and singing. In most cases the first recording start with a background interview.

On this page I will bring all the recordings I can find regarding the Dutch Ashkenazi tradition. The focus now is on collecting, the recordings will be brought integrally. Indexing is a lot of work, this may be done later. The description is taken from the NLI website, it may be incorrect. The Sepahrdi recordings can be found on the "twin website".

In below table, "number", refers to the NLI code. When hovering over the number, the NLI filename can be seen in the left bottom of the browser, starting as of V1-. The performer's name in front has been added by me. Mind that some NLI codes contain multiple steams. The "performer" and "description" are copied from the NLI website and my not be 100% accurate.

(1) I. Dasberg was a GP and moheel (since 1924). After his retirement made aliyah and translated the sidur, chumash and machzorim.
(2) Physician, Mizrachist, Publicist. Succeeded his father in 1931 as hospital physician, "Joodse Invalide" Amsterdam, aliyah in 1939, physician in Jerusalem. Chower in 1931. Mohel. Secrettary "Secretary Genootschap van Joodsche Wetenschap".

(5) S. Elzas was chazzan in the Hague, but his nusach was Rotterdam. There are more of his recordings on this website
(6) L. (Levi) Israels grew up in The Hague, but a a youngster he moved to Amsterdam where most of his nusach comes from.
(7) S. (Sal of Sjlomo) Israels was a brother of Levi Israels. His nusach is The Hague.
(8) these are decedents of chazzan Vleesschouwer from Groningen.
