I. van Creveld

Isaac Bernard (Ies) van Creveld, 1921-2004, Civil Engineer. He wrote a lot about the history of Jews in The Hague. Before the war he was a member of The Hague's synagogue's choir. After the war he didn't feel suitable to be a shalicah tsibur. From time to time he did however step in to help, e.g. once on Rosh Hashana in the Cornelishoutmanstraat synagogue and on the Yamim Noraim in the elderly home in the Weede van Dijkveltstraat, both in The Hague.

בקהלת האשכנזים בהאג בהולנד הכהנים היו נ"כ ג"כ מדי שבת בשבתו ודוקא בתפלת מוסף.
המהג הזה מאורע בעת שהיה חולירע בעיר. ויהי אחרי המגפה נמשך המנהג עד המלחמה העולמית השניה אמנם בהגבלה אחת והיא: אם יארע אעי' פ:א שאין כהן או לוי בבה"כ יבטל המנהג.
וזוכרני כי אירע בשבת אחת שראו אחר הש"ע של שחרית שאין שם כהן אז מהרו ורצו לקרא כהן א' שגר קרוב בשכונת בה"כ כדי שלא יבטל המנהג.
b. On page 39 of the book "Haagse Rabbijnen, ISBN 90-6011-945-2:, Mr. van Creveld writes that Chief Rabbi Samuel Berisch Berenstein introduced duchening on Shabbat in 1866 in connection with the cholera epidemic. This ceased in World War II in 1943 when the Kehilla of The Haag ceased to exist. The kehila was renewed after the war.

d. This melody was also used on Yom Tov for the beracha . For the words, the normal festive melodies are used.
